Sayings 9

The saying can be found in Al-Amali p. 209 by Al-Tusi, but it comes through the path of Abu Al-Mufadhal Mohammad bin Abdullah Al-Shaybani. Refer to his biography in Rijal Al-Najashi. The saying can also be found in Al-Saduq’s Man La Yahtharhu Al-Faqeeh 4/277.

Sayings 10-13

There are no reliable Shia sources for these sayings that predate Nahj Al-Balagha.

Sayings 14

Al-Mufeed narrates this saying in Al-Jamal p. 45, however, it comes through the narrators between Abu Mikhnaf and the eye-witnesses of the event are unknown.

These sayings can all be found in Tuhaf Al-Uqool p. 223 by Ibn Shu’bah. However, no chain is included.

The saying can be found in Al-Tusi’s Al-Amali p. 83, however, it comes through the path of Al-Hasan bin Ali Al-Za’farani who is anonymous in status. See Al-Jawahiri’s Al-Mufeed min Mu’jam Rijal Al-Hadith p. 150.

Sayings 34

The saying can be found in Rawdhat Al-Kafi p. 23, however, it comes through the path of Mohammad bin Ali Al-Tameemi and Mohammad bin Ali bin Ma’amar, who are both anonymous according to Al-Jawahiri in Al-Mufeed min Mu’jam Rijal Al-Hadith p. 555-556. The saying was also narrated by Ibn Shu’bah in Tuhaf Al-Uqool p. 97, but it doesn’t include a chain.

Verdict: Not authentic.

Sayings 35

There are no reliable Shia sources for this saying that predate Nahj Al-Balagha.

Sayings 36

The saying can be found in Kitab Al-Zuhd by Hussain bin Sa’eed Al-Ahwazi p. 81. The narrators are reliable and the chain is connected. It can also be found in Al-Kafi 1/71 and Al-Khisal 1/11.

Verdict: The saying is authentically attributed to Ali bin Abi Talib as per Shia hadith standards.

Sayings 37

The saying can be found in another form in Nasr bin Muzahim’s Kitab Siffeen p. 144, however, it comes through the path of Omar bin Sa’ad who is anonymous in status.

Verdict: Not authentic.

Sayings 38-41

There are no reliable Shia sources for these sayings that predate Nahj Al-Balagha.

Verdict: Not authentic.

Sayings 42

The saying can be found in another form in Nasr bin Muzahim’s Kitab Siffeen p. 528, however, it comes through the path of Omar bin Sa’ad who is anonymous in status. The saying can also be found in Al-Amali p. 2/250 by Al-Tusi, but it comes through the path of Abu Al-Mufadhal Mohammad bin Abdullah Al-Shaybani. Refer to his biography in Rijal Al-Najashi. Al-Ayyashi narrates it in his Tafseer 2/103 as well but does not provide a chain.

Verdict: Not authentic.

Sayings 43-44

The saying can be found in another form in Nasr bin Muzahim’s Kitab Siffeen p. 531, however, it comes through the path of Omar bin Sa’ad who is anonymous in status.

Verdict: Not authentic.

Sayings 45

The saying can be found in Al-Amali 1/209 by Al-Tusi and Bisharat Al-Mustafa p. 130 by Abu Al-Qasim Al-Tabari. Both chains are similar and they return to Ibrahim bin Abdul-A’ala who is anonymous in status according to Al-Jawahiri in Al-Mufeed min Mu’jam Rijal Al-Hadith p. 10.

Verdict: Not authentic.

Sayings 46-53

There are no reliable Shia sources for these sayings that predate Nahj Al-Balagha.

Sayings 54

The saying was reported by Ibn Shu’ba in sections of Tuhaf Al-Uqool on the following pages: 89, 94, and 201. However, no chain is provided, and therefore, the saying is disconnected.

Verdict: Not authentic.

Sayings 55

The saying can be found in Al-Kafi 2/90, however, it comes through the path of Mohammad bin Sinan who has been severely criticized by early Shia hadith scholars. Refer to his biography in Al-Najashi’s Rijal. The saying was also reported by Ibn Shu’ba in sections of Tuhaf Al-Uqool p. 216, however, no chain is provided, and therefore, the saying is disconnected.

Verdict: Not authentic.

Sayings 56-59

There are no reliable Shia sources for these sayings that predate Nahj Al-Balagha.

Verdict: Not authentic.

Sayings 60

The saying can be found in a variation in Man La Yahtharhu Al-Faqeeh 4/388 by Al-Saduq and Al-Ikhtisas p. 229 which has been attributed to Al-Mufeed. Neither of the two source provide a chain.

There are no reliable Shia sources for these sayings that predate Nahj Al-Balagha.

Sayings 68

The saying can be found in Tuhaf Al-Uqool p. 90 by Ibn Shu’bah, however, no chain is included, and therefore, the narration is disconnected.

Sayings 70-75

There are no reliable Shia sources for these sayings that predate Nahj Al-Balagha.

Verdict: Not authentic.

Sayings 76

The saying can be found in Kitab Siffeen p. 476 by Nasr bin Muzahim, however, it comes from the path of Amr bin Shimr who is very weak. Refer to his biography in Rijal Al-Najashi.

Verdict: Not authentic.

Sayings 77

The saying can be found in Al-Amali p. 371 by Al-Saduq and Al-Karajuki’s Kanz Al-Fawa’id p. 270. Al-Saduq’s chain includes Mohammad bin Sinan while Al-Karajki’s chain includes Mohammad bin Abdullah Al-Shaybani. Refer to #9 and #55 above.

Verdict: Not authentic.

Sayings 78

The saying can be found in Al-Kafi 1/155, Al-Tawheed p. 273  and Uyoon Akhbar Al-Redha 1/138 by Al-Saduq, and Al-Karajuki’s Kanz Al-Fawa’id p. 169. The chain in Al-Kafi contains a major disconnection. Al-Saduq’s chains are connected, however, they contains issues with the narrators. One chain includes Sahl bin Ziyad, who was accused of fabrication. See Rijal Al-Najashi. A second chain contains Sulaiman bin Mohammad Al-Qurashi, who is unknown in status. The third includes Mohammad bin Abdullah bin Nujaih, who is anonymous according to Al-Jawahiri in Al-Mufeed min Mu’jam Rijal Al-Hadith p. 545. The fourth chain includes Al-Abbas bin Bakkar Al-Dhabbi who is also anonymous according to Al-Jawahiri p. 300. Al-Karajuki’s chain is the same as Al-Saduq’s second chain. The saying also exists in Tuhaf Al-Uqool p. 468 but without a chain.

Sayings 79

The saying can be found in a shortened variation in Al-Barqi’s Al-Mahsin 1/230, however, Mohammad bin Ali is not known as there are many narrators with that name.

Sayings 80-81

There are no reliable Shia sources for these sayings that predate Nahj Al-Balagha.

Verdict: Not authentic.

Sayings 82

A portion of the saying can be found in Al-Mahasin 1/229 by Al-Barqi, however, it contains Ja’afar bin Mohammad Al-Ash’ari who is anonymous in status according to Al-Jawahiri in Al-Mufeed min Mu’jam Rijal Al-Hadith p. 111. Al-Saduq also narrates the saying in his Al-Khisal 1/149 with two chains. The first chain is through Abdullah bin Ahmad Al-Ta’ee, who is anonymous according to Al-Jawahiri p. 325, while the second chain goes through Al-Sari bin Isma’eel who is also unknown.

Sayings 83-86

There are no reliable Shia sources for these sayings that predate Nahj Al-Balagha.

Sayings 87

Al-Tusi narrates this saying in Al-Amali 1/60, however, it comes through the path of Musa bin Zakariyya who is anonymous in status.

Verdict: Not authentic.

Sayings 88

There are no reliable Shia sources for this saying that predate Nahj Al-Balagha.

Verdict: Not authentic.

Sayings 89

The saying can be found in Rawdhat Al-Kafi p. 307, Al-Khisal 1/22 and Al-Amali p. 62 by Al-Saduq, and Al-Mahasin 1/29 by Al-Barqi. It comes through two main chains. One of the chains of Al-Saduq includes an anonymous narrator. The other sources all include the same chain and it comes through Al-Nawfali, who is seen as reliable by those that accept the general tawtheeqaat of Tafseer Al-Qummi.

Verdict: The saying may be authentic according to some Shia scholars.

Sayings 90

The saying can be found in Al-Kafi 1/36 and Al-Saduq’s Ma’ani Al-Akhbar p. 226. The chain provided by Al-Kulayni has a connected chain with reliable narrators.

Verdict: The saying is authentic according to Shia hadith standards.

Sayings 91

The saying can be found in Al-Kafi 1/48, however, it comes through a disconnected chain.

Verdict: Not authentic.

There are no reliable Shia sources for this saying that predate Nahj Al-Balagha.

Sayings 93

The saying can be found in Al-Amali 2/193 by Al-Tusi, but it comes through the path of Abu Al-Mufadhal Mohammad bin Abdullah Al-Shaybani. Refer to his biography in Rijal Al-Najashi.

Sayings 94

Abdul-Zahra’ states that the saying can be found in Al-Mahasin, but it seems that he erred in his referencing, for the saying cannot be found in that book.

Sayings 95

The saying can be found in Al-Kafi 2/75, Al-Amali p. 151 by Al-Mufeed, and Al-Amali 1/60 by Al-Tusi. Al-Kulayni and Al-Mufeed both quote from Mohammad bin Sinan who is severely weakened. See his biography in Rijal Al-Najashi. Al-Tusi’s chain includes Eisa bin Abi Al-Ward, who is anonymous according to Al-Jawahiri in Al-Mufeed min Mu’jam Rijal Al-Hadith p. 446.

The saying can be found in Rawdhat Al-Kafi p. 57, but it comes through the path of Sahl bin Ziyad who has been accused of fabricating narrations. Refer to his biography in Rijal Al-Najashi.

The saying can be found in Tuhaf Al-Uqool p. 212 but it does not have a chain.

Verdict: Not authentic.

Sayings 104

The saying can be found in Al-Khisal by Al-Saduq 1/159, Al-Amali by Al-Mufeed p. 71, and Kanz Al-Fawa’id by Al-Karajuki p. 30, however, they all are from the same narrator, Nawf Al-Bikali, who is anonymous in status according to Al-Jawahiri in Al-Mufeed min Mu’jam Rijal Al-Hadith p. 643.

Verdict: Not authentic.

Sayings 107

Ibn Abi Al-Hadeed in his commentary of Nahjul Balagha 1/78 quotes the saying from Abu Mikhnaf, however, Abu Mikhnaf does not include a chain to the saying.

Sayings 108

The saying can be found in Rawdhat Al-Kafi p. 31 and Ibn Shu’bah’s Tuhaf Al-Uqool p. 95. The chain in Al-Kafi comes through Mohammad bin Ali bin Ma’amar who is anonymous in status according to Al-Jawahiri in Al-Mufeed min Mu’jam Rijal Al-Hadith p. 556.  Ibn Shu’bah does not provide a chain.

Verdict: Not authentic.

Sayings 109

The saying can be found in Al-Amali p. 3 by Al-Mufeed and Bisharat Al-Mustafa p. 5 by Mohammad bin Abi Al-Qasim Al-Tabari. Both sources quote the same chain which include Mohammad bin Ali bin Amr bin Thareef who is anonymous in status.

Verdict: Not authentic.

Sayings110-112

There are no reliable Shia sources for these sayings that predate Nahj Al-Balagha.

Sayings 113

The saying can be found in Rawdhat Al-Kafi p. 17, Al-Amali p. 193 by Al-Saduq and Ibn Shu’bah’s Tuhaf Al-Uqool p. 94. The chain in Al-Kafi comes through Mohammad bin Ali bin Ma’amar who is anonymous in status according to Al-Jawahiri in Al-Mufeed min Mu’jam Rijal Al-Hadith p. 556. In this narration, Al-Saduq is quoting Al-Kafi. Ibn Shu’bah does not provide a chain.

The saying can be found in Rawdhat Al-Kafi p. 112 and Tuhaf Al-Uqool by Ibn Shu’bah p. 203. The chain in Al-Kafi contains Al-Qasim bin Mohammad Al-Asbahani who is anonymous according to Al-Jawahiri in Al-Mufeed min Mu’jam Rijal Al-Hadith p. 464. Ibn Shu’bah does not provide a chain.

Sayings 117

The saying is found in Al-Amali p. 709 by Al-Saduq. However, the chain includes Ja’afar bin Abdullah Al-Nawanji and Abdul-Jabbar bin Mohammad who is of anonymous status.
